Who is this course for?

This course is for students interested in looking at how gender roles have disempowered women throughout history and in different cultures. Women's Studies looks at the world we live in – both past and present – and explores ways in which society's perception of women and girls has changed. The course will suit students who have an interest in History, and in analysing societal ideologies and media.

No specific background knowledge is assumed. High order writing skills are desirable.

What will I learn?

You will learn about how gender is constructed in different ways, the waves of feminism, experiences of women from different times and in different cultures, and how the past impacts the present. You will also engage in discussions around contemporary societal issues, looking at various forms of entertainment and media.

You will use the knowledge gained through the Gender Analysis Framework to study three key issues:

  • Cultural representations of women/representations of women in cultural texts.
  • Health and well-being
  • Women's achievements and struggles, focusing on the diversity of women's history and experiences.

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate your learning through the following assessment types:

Internal 70% (Consists of 5-6 tasks, including a compulsory 1200 word essay)

  • Text Analysis 20%
  • Essay 20%
  • Folio 30%

External 30% (A 2000 word investigation into a negotiated topic)

  • Issues Analysis 30%
